Petropavlovsk airport gets ready to receive Presidents of Kazakhstan and Russia

This year the airport of Petropavlovsk is going to receive the airplanes of the Presidents of Kazakhstan and Russia, Kazinform reports.

The 15th Forum of Interregional Cooperation of the two countries is expected to be held in the end of 2018 in Petropavlovsk and will be devoted to tourism.

According to the Administration of Passenger Transport and Automobile Roads of North-Kazakhstan Region, the airport of the town is under reconstruction to receive the important guests which require about KZT 1 billion.

To repair the road to the airport there will be spent over KZT 985 million.

“Major repairs will be carried out by the method of cold recycling. The crushed stone foundation and asphalt concrete pavement will be repaired, artificial lighting replaced with modern energy-saving, new power distribution equipment for the newly installed power grids is installed. We plan to finish the works before September 1st,” the Administration said.

Since 2016, after the reconstruction, the international airport in Petropavlovsk can take aircraft of any class.

Repair of the airport began in 2014 under the leadership of the former Governor of the region Yerik Sultanov. Until then, the airport was practically not functioning. The airport was shaken by numerous scandals with nonpayment of wages and inadequacy to the requirements of the “international” status. The reconstruction gave second life to this facility.

KZT 7 billion were allocated from the reserve of the Government of Kazakhstan to strengthen the existing coverage of the runway, so that the runway was extended and expanded. They reconstructed the taxiway and apron, installed light-signal equipment, replaced all engineering communications, purchased X-ray television inspection equipment for the terminal and installed video cameras.

Nowadays, you can fly from Petropavlovsk to Astana, Almaty and Shymkent. Domestic flights are subsidized. This year, the amount of subsidies for flights to Astana and Almaty is increased to KZT 71 million and KZT 222 million, respectively. About KZT 169 million was allocated from the republican budget for flights to Shymkent.

According to the management of passenger transport and highways, the number of air passengers increased 4 times last year, as compared to 2016 – from four to 16.8 thousand people.

“Measures are being taken to organize passenger flights to Aktau and Semei. With foreign tour operators and SCAT Airlines, Kazakhstan, the possibility of launching charter flights to the cities of Russia and Germany is being worked out,” the airport administration said.

The airport in Petropavlovsk has been functioning since 1974. During the existence of the USSR, this was one of the transit airports in the post-Soviet space. It serviced up to 40 flights per day to the following destinations: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Mineral Waters, Sochi, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Khabarovsk, Chita, Tashkent and all regional centers of Kazakhstan.
