SYRIAN AIR commented on the closure of Georgian airspace

Georgia’s closure of airspace for Syrian airlines due to Syria’s recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia’s independence has led to re-routing and increased costs, Talal Abdulkarim, Director General, Syrian Air, told RIA Novosti, Russia.

Earlier, Georgia broke off diplomatic relations with Syria after it recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In addition, Georgia has closed airspace for several Syrian airlines.

Mr. Abdulkarim said. “In fact, the closure of the Georgian airspace for Syrian airlines caused losses, as the flight time increased and, therefore, the cost of operating the aircraft increased.

Our planes are now flying to the east over Azerbaijan and through the airspace of Russia. Despite this, our air company always seeks to make its flights to Russia, whatever the difficulties are.”
