Turkmenistan hires Spanish airline to transport its passengers to the EU

Turkmenistan Airlines has chartered a plane owned by Wamos Air, the Spanish charter airline, to transport passengers from Birmingham to Ashgabat, after the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) withdrew permission from the airline to operate flights to EU countries, Gundogar reported on February 7, 2019.

The flights for Turkmenistan Airlines were suspended due to the incompatibility of the Turkmen aircraft with the requirements of international safety standards.

The Turkmen side does not comment on the situation with the sanctions imposed on it. Information on the cancellation of flights to Birmingham, London, Frankfurt and Paris was not published in the state media.

Before the agreement between Turkmenistan and Wamos Air was announced, several flights of the Turkmenistan Airlines from Ashgabat to Birmingham (roundtrip air service) were cancelled without replacement. Information that the air carrier compensated passengers for the cost of pre-purchased, but not used air tickets, was not received.

We add the Turkmenistan Airlines’ official account on Twitter published the following information on February 6, 2019: “The flight T5 422, flying en route Birmingham – Ashgabat – Amritsar will be operated on schedule.” Prior to this, the last message of this account was dated September 4, 2018.
