Turkmen edition explains what caused ban on flights to the EU for Turkmenistan Airlines

The pro-government Orient edition, Turkmenistan, reported that “discrepancies in the U.S. and European systems to define the requirements and standards to operate air equipment” caused the ban on flights for Turkmenistan Airlines airplanes over the E.U. territory.

According to U.S. standards, the history of the aircraft is recorded from the date of its purchase from the manufacturer and, according to European rules, this is done from the date the aircraft was produced at the plant.

According to the edition, Turkmenistan Airlines received a written warning about the speedy suspension of flight authorization from the CEO of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Patrick Key on January 31, 2019. The letter itself was not published.

The publication explains the reasons for which the airline did not immediately take into account the nuances and differences in safety standards, by the fact that Turkmenistan Airlines fleet consists exclusively of U.S. Boeings, therefore it is “logical” that the U.S. system was applied even for flights to Europe.

It should be noted that the U.S. Embassy in Ashgabat has prohibited its employees from using the services of Turkmenistan Airlines for both domestic and international flights.

According to Orient, there are no technical claims to the aircraft, and the fleet is constantly updated. “The old Boeings produced in 2003-2004 are being sold and new ones are being bought,” the newspaper writes.

Note that, according to the Flightradar24 website, Turkmenistan Airlines aircraft are really quite new, as their average age is 7.6 years. However, Boeing 757s, which are 18 and 22 years old, also regularly operated their flights to the U.K.

Turkmenistan Airlines will tidy up the documentation of its aircraft with the help of experts from Lufthansa Consulting. In the meantime, Wamos Air, a Spanish air carrier, was hired to operate the flights. According to The Telegraph, this European airline has one of the lowest ratings from Trip Advisor.
