New airport to be built in eastern Kazakhstan

An airport can be built in the Katon-Karagay district of the East Kazakhstan Region, the Kazinform News Agency reported.

An airport previously operated in the village of Ulken Naryn. The owner of the object asks for a large amount for its location and skeleton. As regards this territory, it was impossible to attract tourists due to the lack of an airport. The Governor’s Office intends to resolve this issue through the construction of a new facility.

“It was originally scheduled to complete the old airport. However, we could not come to a single decision with its current owner. Therefore, it was decided that it would be right to build a new airport next to the old one, since this place is very convenient and safe, as regards both the seismic and geodesic positions. A district administration will be involved in building the airport. And the runway will be built at the expense of the budget. Thus, tourists will be able to fly by plane to Katon-Karagay from Astana and Almaty, without stopping in Ust-Kamenogorsk,” said Nurzhan Zhumadilov, Director, Passenger Transport and Highways Department.

It is not yet known how much the planes will be and how much money will be needed for the project. If the design work is completed this year, construction will be carried out in 2020-2021.
