AZAL to receive its first BOEING 737 MAX new generation aircraft in second half of 2019

Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL, part of the AZAL structure) will receive its first Boeing 737 MAX new generation aircraft in the second half of 2019, Jahangir Askerov, president of AZAL, said.

“From the second half of 2019, the AZAL fleet will begin to be replenished with new modern Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, the total number of which will reach ten,” Mr. Askerov said, as his words are quoted by the press service of AZAL.

According to the information provided by the air company, the AZAL president held a meeting on Tuesday with a delegation of the European Commission Department on Transport and Mobility, headed by Director-General Henrik Hololei.

“The parties discussed the prospects for cooperation and the application of the experience of European specialists in civil aviation of Azerbaijan. The purpose of the visit of the delegation to Azerbaijan is an agreement on a common aviation space between Azerbaijan and the European Union,” the report says.

Earlier it was reported that according to the agreement concluded with the Boeing Company, USA, the first two Boeing 737 MAXs will be delivered to Azerbaijan by the end of 2018.

In April 2017, Silk Way Airlines, Azerbaijan, and Boeing signed a contract for the purchase of 10 Boeing 737 MAX passenger planes. AZAL will be the operator of these aircraft. The total amount of the agreement is about US $ 1 billion. All aircraft must be delivered to Azerbaijan before the end of 2020.

The AZAL’s total air route network has about 40 destinations in 25 countries. In 2017, the airline carried more than 2.2 million passengers.

AZAL currently operates aircraft such as Boeing 787, Boeing 767, Boeing 757, as well as Airbus 340, Airbus 320, Airbus 319 and Embraer 190.
