Semey Airport offered to name in honour of Kazakh writer and playwright

At the reporting meeting with the population, the Governor of the East Kazakhstan Region Danial Akhmetov suggested calling the airport in Semey, Kazakhstan, on behalf of the Kazakh writer and playwright Mukhtar Auezov, Tengrinews.kz reports with reference to the East Kazakhstan Information Center.

“Semey is one of the spiritual and cultural centers of our country. Such great people as Abai, Shakarim and Mukhtar were born on this blessed land. The name of each of them is very valuable for all of us,” Mr. Akhmetov noted.

The Governor emphasized that at present, the streets in Semey are named after Abay and Shakarim, there is the Abay Theater, the University of Shakarim, and a new cultural and sports center named Abai Arena is being built.

“I am sure that this proposal will receive unconditional support from the residents of the city,” he said.

It is reported that KZT 10.6 billion (US $ 1 = KZT 376) was allocated to reconstruct the runway and terminal building of the airport in Semey.

In 2019-2021, the airport in Kazakhstan’s Ust-Kamenogorsk will be upgraded. Also the capital reconstruction of the runway is awaited by the airport located in the village of Urdzhar, which should make the Alakol Lake to be more accessible for tourists. The project cost is KZT 3.6 billion.

One should note that flights from Ust-Kamenogorsk to Semey, Zaisan, Urdzhar (roundtrip air service), as well as from Urzhar to Almaty and Astana are subsidized in the region. Also, as part of the development of small aviation sector in the Katon-Karagay district, a new airport will appear for tourists wishing to visit the Berel burial mounds and the Rakhman fountains.
