New airport in Turkmenistan’s Turkmenabad is only 5% loaded

On February 26, 2019, there was one-year anniversary since the opening of the new international airport in the city of Turkmenabad in Lebap province/region. According to the pro-government publication named Arzuw, this date was met by workers at the airfield airport building with high labour achievements.

It is reported that for the year, the airport services were used by “more than a quarter of a million passengers”, which turned out to be by 12,000 more than planned.

At the same time, as journalists of the information resource emphasize, the maximum capacity of the airport is 500 passengers per hour or 4,320,000 passengers per year. That is, at the moment the airport is loaded with 5.2% of its maximum capacity.

According to the website, flights to Ashgabat, Turkmenbashi and Dashoguz are carried out from the airport. The airport is able to take any type of aircraft, including A380s and An-225 Mriya, but there are no international flights, although “the issue of launching flights to China, Turkey and other countries is being worked out.”

It is possible that the load on the airport will still increase, since “the indicators of January-February 2019 also indicate a positive growth trend.”

Recall that the airport was listed in the Guinness Book of Records “for the unique architectural embodiment of the airport building, the passenger terminal, which has a shape of the Oguz Khan star when looking at it from a bird’s eye view.
