Penalty for smoking in Kazakhstani aircraft increases up to KZT 126 thousand

In Kazakhstan, in accordance with amendments to the current legislation, the fine for smoking on an airplane, including the use of electronic cigarettes, since spring 2019 has been 50 monthly calculation indices (MCI), or KZT 126,250 (US $1 = KZT 388), Kazinform news agency reported with reference to Air Astana JSC.

“In April 2019, the President of Kazakhstan signed amendments and additions to the Code of Administrative Offenses, article 441 headed as “Violation of the Ban to Use Tobacco Products and Electronic Cigarettes in Certain Public Places.” According to these amendments, from now on, the fine for smoking on the plane, including the use of electronic cigarettes, is 50 MCI, which equals KZT 126,250 (in 2015, a fine in the amount of only 3 MCI or KZT 5,946 was provided for such a violation). Since May 2019, 26 smokers have been fined under the new rules,” the airline’s press service said.

In 2018, the number of passengers smoking on board Air Astana increased by 34%, as compared to 2015, from 123 cases to 166. Most often, such violations are recorded on flights from Almaty to Istanbul and vice versa, as well as on flights from Almaty to Moscow and Kiev and back.
