Helicopter landing sites to be chosen in Georgia

On the instructions of the Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, the experts of the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency will study the possibility of building landing sites for helicopters, the Civil Aviation Agency said.

The working group was created in June 2019 and it includes representatives of the Georgian Air Navigation Agency together with inspectors and flight safety experts of the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency.

Specialists select all those geographical points where it is technically impossible to build an airfield, but in order to carry out rescue, medical, tourist and aviation operations, it is advisable to conduct irregular air transportation.

The working group studies the terrain, existing high-altitude obstacles, climatic processes, as well as buildings located in flight zones.

By this time, experts have already studied the regions of Kakheti and Mtskheta-Mtianeti. In total, experts selected 57 points including 28 in Kakheti and 29 in Mtskheta-Mtianeti. At the moment, specialists are studying the Racha region.

After completion of the sites study, experts will prepare a detailed report and an electronic map, which will be published on the website of the Civil Aviation Agency and will be available to all interested persons.

The Civil Aviation Agency has prepared a draft amendment to the Georgian Air Code, according to which an explanation appears – landing pad.

According to this change, the runways will not go through a comprehensive certification process. Only their registration will take into account the flight technical characteristics and requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Arrangement of the runway and its operation do not require such material and human resources, as airfields do. A helicopter, unlike an airplane, is characterized by flexibility and the ability to get to hard-to-reach places.

It is possible to equip a helicopter landing pad on a surface with a natural cover, where there is no need to build a passenger terminal and other buildings, the Civil Aviation Agency notes.
