Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Committee names the main reason for high cost of air tickets

The Civil Aviation Committee (CAC) under the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development talked about the main reasons for the high cost of air tickets in Kazakhstan, Kazinform reported.

“Currently, a National Plan of Measures is being developed to implement instructions expressed by the President of Kazakhstan when he talked to people of the country. Then, the President criticized the high cost of airline tickets. The main problem of the high cost of air tickets is the shortage of carrying capacities, that is, the lack of the required number of aircraft to meet the existing demand and the high cost of jet fuel. In order to reduce the cost of tariffs, on May 1, 2019, the domestic low-cost airline named FlyArystan was launched. Currently, the sales depth is about two months, more than 340 thousand air tickets have been sold, half of them with a minimum cost of up to KZT 10 thousand,”said Aibek Alzhanov, Deputy Chairperson, Civil Aviation Committee, during a briefing for journalists at the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development.

The CAC noted that in order to radically change the situation regarding the high cost of airline tickets, the Government, jointly with Samruk-Kazyna JSC plans additional capitalization of airlines such as Air Astana and Qazaq Air to increase their air fleet. The CAC also talked about the current situation with jet fuel prices.

“As regards the cost of air transportation itself, the cost of airport services is not so high – up to 11%. Work with other state structures, in particular, with the Ministry of Energy, will continue to reduce prices for jet fuel. At present, after the modernization of three refineries, the need is almost satisfied. We reduced import dependence on Russian jet fuel, which allowed us to reduce the price of fuel in Kazakhstan,” Mr. Alzhanov added.
