Only eight metric tons of cargo transported by air in Tajikistan

The presence of a cargo terminal did not stimulate an increase in air cargo in Tajikistan. Only eight metric tons of cargo were transported by air in Tajikistan during the Jan-Sep 2019 period.

Since the beginning of 2019, the cargo transportation capacities carried by air decreased by 30.4%, according to statistics. In addition, the share of air transport in the total cargo transportation capacities is insignificant and amounted to 0.001% over this period.

Recall that in June last year, a cargo terminal was commissioned at the Dushanbe International Airport. The project was implemented in order to increase the ability to control and receive aircraft at the named airport.

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) allocated US $ 17.5 million to build the cargo terminal, as well as install ILS and PALS navigation systems.

The total area of the cargo terminal is 3,713 square meters, of these, the cargo compartment is 2,400 square meters, the two-story office building for staff is 1,313 square meters.

Experts note that Tajikistan’s international airports are not busy, both in terms of passenger and cargo transportation. Since the beginning of 2019, 554.7 thousand passengers have been transported by air, which is by 10.4% less than in January-September 2018.
