Air traffic record: Kazakh airlines carried 7.9 million passengers for Jan-Nov 2019

For January – November 2019, 7.9 million people have been transported by air in Kazakhstan and this figure is by 7.5% higher, as compared to the corresponding period last year (7.3 million people), Kazinform reports with reference to Finprom.

This is the largest number of passengers in history.

In total, in 2018, airlines transported 7.6 million people, which is by 2.6% more, as compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development, Kazakh airports served 14.8 million passengers for Jan-Oct 2019. According to the results of the current year, an indicator of 16 million passengers is expected.

According to the mentioned Ministry, in 2018, domestic airports serviced 15 million passengers including nine million on domestic flights and six million – on international ones.

Thus, according to the results of 2019, an increase in passenger traffic by 6.6% is expected. The annual increase in the number of passengers served is about 10%. Taking into account the ‘open skies’ mode introduced at 11 domestic airports, LOT Polish Airlines (Poland), Air Asia (Malaysia), Belavia (Belarus), Jazeera Airways (Kuwait) and Salam Air (Oman) are expected to launch their new flights.

Since 2020, the launching of new flights will continue the steady growth in passenger traffic and maintain positive development dynamics.

Recall that, starting since November 1, 2019 Kazakhstan has introduced the “open skies” mode for foreign air carriers at the airports of Nur-Sultan, Almaty, Shymkent, Aktau, Karaganda, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Pavlodar, Kokshetau, Taraz, Petropavlovsk and Semey for three years. This provides for the lifting of restrictions by the number of flights and the provision of the fifth degree of “freedom of air” for foreign airlines flying to the destinations, where Kazakh air carriers do not operate on.

According to the Civil Aviation Committee, the introduction of the “open skies” mode in Kazakhstan will help attracting new foreign air carriers, launch new international air routes, increase competition, and ultimately affect the reduction in the cost of air tickets and increase the availability of air transport for the general population, as well as develop tourism and increase transport accessibility of the Astana International Financial Center.

This year, with an increase in passenger traffic, there is a significant increase in revenues of air transport enterprises: in January – November, revenues of air carriers increased by 16.4% and amounted to KZT 369.2 billion (USD 1 = KZT 383). For comparison: according to the results for the same period last year, revenues reached KZT 317.1 billion, with an increase by 16.6%. Passenger transportation accounted for 97.9% of all revenues; the amount in the segment amounted to KZT 361.2 billion. Revenues from the transportation of goods and baggage, in turn, amounted to KZT 7.9 billion, or 2.1% of the total amount.
