Kazakhstan to send two planes to China to evacuate its citizens

Kazakhstan will send two aircraft to China to evacuate its citizens due to an outbreak of coronavirus, the Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday.

The ministry’s statement says that “in accordance with the order of the President of Kazakhstan, Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev, to take measures to protect Kazakhstani citizens from being infected with coronavirus, the Government of Kazakhstan will evacuate the citizens of Kazakhstan who are in China now and have expressed a desire to return to their homeland.”

“On February 10 and 12, 2020, in agreement with the Chinese authorities, two Air Astana airlines will be sent to Beijing to evacuate Kazakh citizens. Passengers will be escorted by medical personnel during the flight. At the request of the Chinese side, these flights are planned to bring 47 citizens of Kazakhstan to Beijing China, as well as the non-commercial cargo of the Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan,” the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said.

The Foreign Ministry said there were 719 citizens of Kazakhstan in China and 391 of them have asked for assistance in returning to their homeland. The rest – employees and family members of diplomatic institutions, students and other private individuals – expressed a desire to stay in China.

On December 31, 2019 Chinese authorities informed WHO of an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Experts have identified the causative agent of the disease – coronavirus 2019-nCoV. To date, in China only, 908 people have died of the disease, including two foreigners, the number of confirmed cases of infection has exceeded 40.1 thousand.
